Placenta Options -
When you book your placenta encapsulation you will receive detailed information about the service. Feel free to use the contact  form to ask any questions not answered below.

How far in advance can I book placenta encapsulation?
Once you have an estimated due date, you can book!

I’m about to give birth! Is it too late to book placenta encapsulation?
No! Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss your options.

What if the hospital won’t let me have the placenta?
The placenta is your property, not the hospital’s. Make clear to your midwife that you are having your placenta encapsulated and (s)he will make sure that it is respected and saved in the proper manner.

How is the placenta collected?
I collect the placenta personally, as soon as possible after the birth (usually within 12-48 hours). I collect from the hospital or your home, depending on where you are at the time I am able to come. I bring a sterilised container and a cool bag for transportation.

How should the placenta be kept?
The midwife will check the placenta and clear it for ingestion. It should be placed in a clean, lidded glass container (I send you a  link to a suitable container at the time of booking) that is kept cool either in a cool bag or fridge. The placenta will keep in a fridge for up five days.

How big should the container be?
An average Pyrex casserole dish is ideal.

What if I have a caesarean birth?
The only difference is that you may not be allowed to take your storage container into theatre. In which case, the placenta should be placed in a yellow biohazard bag and kept cool in a cool bag or hospital fridge.

What if I have a managed third stage?
A placenta can still be processed and consumed after a managed third stage. Although the injection of synometrine leaves a residue of artificial hormone in the placenta, this does not outweigh the benefits of encapsulation.

What if the placenta is stained with meconium?
The placenta can still be encapsulated. Your midwife will need to make a note of the staining so that the placenta is sterilised before preparation.

Can I get stem cells taken from the placenta first?
Yes. Placenta Options will collect the placenta after stem cells have been taken.

Can I use my placenta if I have Group Strep B?
Yes, provided you want TCM Method as the steaming part of the process will destroy the Group B Strep bacteria. Raw Method or smoothies are not recommended if you have Group B Strep.

Can I save some of my placenta for planting?
Some mothers want to keep part of the placenta for planting or other rituals. This is fine, but obviously the more you keep the fewer capsules you will receive.

I live more than 70 miles from Ely – can I still have placenta services?
Due to the nature of the service, Placenta Options usually operates in a limited region: Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich, Essex, Bedford, Peterborough and other locations within 70 miles of Ely. Services are sometimes offered further afield, in which case the fee increases with mileage. Please contact me for more details.

Can I take placenta capsules even if I’m ill?
In most cases, yes. Although the energy from placenta tablets produced using the TCM method can delay recovery from infection so capsules should not be taken if you have an infection, such as 'flu or mastitis, raw capsules can be taken.

How do you turn the placenta into pills?
The placenta is taken away to be steamed (unless you book the Raw Method), dehydrated and ground to a powder before being put into 100% vegetable capsules and returned to you by post.

What steps are taken to guard against infection?
Tara Bungard holds a UK/EU standards certificate for Food Hygiene and Safety and a certificate in Infection Control for Healthcare. All equipment used in the encapsulation process is thoroughly cleaned and sterilised using a hospital-grade chemical detergent before and after each use.

How long do the capsules keep for?
If not consumed within the first few weeks, capsules can be kept in the fridge for up to a year and then frozen and kept indefinitely. Some mothers keep a portion of capsules to help during menopause.

What is the benefit of placenta pills for menopause?
The many hormones in your placenta are believed to ease menopausal hormonal fluctuations.
